The Sonatina for Flute and Piano (2002) is a concert showpiece in three connected movements: fast - slow - fast. The first movement is driven by obsessive ostinati that are presented in alternation until the climax whereupon they merge into one large rhythmic statement. The second movement is far more comtemplative with drifting melodic lines that show off the gorgeous lower register of the flute. The final movement is an explosive rhythmic romp which draws heavily from jazz and the ideas of Stravinsky.
