Three Miniatures is structured in three movements which are meant to be heard as part of an organic whole. The form of the composition is determined by each movements pitch class content, tessitura, and orchestration.

The first movement is a palindrome inverting around the pitch B4. The second movement is the most lyrical of the three, spinning out long lines with constantly shifting timbres. In the third movement, echoes from earlier in the work are heard and the piece ends with nothing more than a sigh from the marimba. Three Miniatures was written between November 2005 and February 2006 as a set of etudes in structure and orchestration in preparation for the final draft and subsequent revisions of the forthcoming Chamber Concerto.
