The 13th Mourner (2004) is a ballet written to explore the relationship between art and the artist, the artist and society, and society and art. The synopsis follows:

Tableau 1: Rite of Genesis

Setting: McKintosh's dream on a Saturday evening.. Through his dream, four dancers are presented to McKintosh, the sum of which equals the idea for his artistic creation. It is through their interaction that he conceives the idea for the Artwork.

Tableau 2: McKintosh

Setting: The city park, the next day. Having been inspired the night before, McKintosh observes women playing in the park. Finding several activities interesting, he decides to join them, trying their movements on his own body to discover how they feel before settling on a final version.

Tableau 3: Lost Soul

Setting: McKintosh's' studio, later that same day. Having discovered the perfect individual through which to express his idea, he falls in love with the Artwork, only to have both it and his relationship with it spurned by society and subsequently, destroyed.

Tableau 4: Memento Mori

Setting: McKinstosh's' studio, several years later. Several years have passed and now the same group that had destroyed the Artwork laments its loss. They have taken on aspects of the Artwork and it is through this that it lives on, resurrected from its own ashes.

The work was choreographed by Carmen Gutierrez, Melody Potter, and Mariko Yamada. Brian Carucci, clarinet and Christopher Lanz, conductor. Costume and makeup design by Krista Thomson. Lighting design by Don Borsh. Based on a concept by William Johnson.
