Duo Sonatina (2004) was composed for choreographer Mariko Yamada from Tokyo, Japan. As a source of inspiration, I chose to draw upon the motor rhythms and virtuosic string writing seen in Vivaldi violin concerti after I had watched her dance in a piece set to the music of the "Winter" section from his collection The Four Seasons. Tight tone clusters, short motivic fragments, and a driving pulse propel this work through three connected movements to the dramatic finale.
